Have you ever wanted to text faster and easier? Here’s your chance to learn these common abbreviations used in English conversation and try them out in your everyday texts to see which ones best suit your style!

CMIIW
You will often see “CMIIW” in chats or posts. It stands for “correct me if I’m wrong” and is used when someone shares something that they are not 100% sure about. For example, “I think tomorrow’s meeting starts at 8 a.m., CMIIW.” You’ll often see this on social media, like X, when people share information but are unsure about the information that they are giving.
IYKYK
“IYKYK” stands for “if you know, you know” and is used when something can only be understood by those who have been through the same thing. You might see it in TikTok captions for cafeteria food reviews, like, “That cafeteria food really hits the spot, IYKYK.”
TTYL
If you want to end a conversation in a casual way and without sounding too abrupt, you can use “TTYL”, which stands for “talk to you later.” This is quite common in everyday life, such as when you want to say, “I gotta go to class now, TTYL!”
LOL
“LOL” stands for “laughing out loud” and is used when you want to show that something is very funny. However, sometimes people use this expression even when they’re only mildly amused. On X or WhatsApp, you might see people writing, “Bro, what’s this, LOL.”
GTG
If you need to end the conversation right away, you can use “GTG”, which stands for “got to go.” This abbreviation keeps the message clear, for example, “It’s been great chatting with you, but I’ve GTG because I have an appointment.” Unlike “TTYL,” which feels more casual and open to chatting later, “GTG” means you have to leave right away because something urgent came up.
Try these out next time you’re chatting someone up! Comment if you know more!
