Amid the barrage of entertainment that is readily available and easily accessible today, boredom is often seen as something to be avoided. Many people believe that learning must always be enjoyable to be effective. In reality, boredom offers several hidden benefits that are rarely recognized in aiding the learning process.

When nothing of interest is happening, the brain’s Default Mode Network (DMN) becomes active and gives the brain opportunities to explore and think about various things. In this situation, the brain has the opportunity to reflect on past events or information acquired through the learning process. Implementing this knowledge to the language learning process, we can gain a deeper understanding of the material studied because the brain connects new knowledge with events that have occurred in our lives.
Boredom also drives people to seek out and explore challenges and new habits, such as reading new material, conducting experiments, or trying unique new things. This is where curiosity and the desire to grow gradually take root and may even develop into a new hobby.
In the learning process, progress isn’t always immediate. Many topics require in-depth study and intensive repetition. It is during this phase that boredom often sets in. However, experiencing boredom actually helps cultivate patience and perseverance. By continuing to practice even when boredom sets in, your skills will gradually improve.
Take your learning journey one step at a time. Even when you feel like you’re stuck or fed up with the usual routine, who knows, it could be your tipping point to fluency!
