Every Eid al-Fitr, we usually stick to the same old greetings. This year, why not switch things up and send your wishes in English? Fortunately, this is one way to practice your English skills while continuing to share smiles and words of happiness with those around you.
If You Want To Sound Natural and Sincere
Try something different than the usual “copy-paste” phrases. It’s not just “Happy Eid Mubarak. Please forgive my mistakes.“ That sentence is not wrong, but many people feel that it is too generic and lacks emotional connection. You can make it more lively by adding a personal touch, such as, ”Wishing you a peaceful Eid filled with joy and meaningful moments with your family.” Small additions like this make your greeting sound more sincere, warm, and friendly.
If You Are Saying Greetings To Someone Older or More Senior
You also need to differentiate between phrases for colleagues and friends. For your coworkers or seniors, use a tone that remains polite and slightly formal, such as “Wishing you and your family a joyful and blessed Eid.”
If You Are Saying Greetings To Your Friend
For your close friends, you can be more relaxed and personal, for example, “Eid Mubarak! Hope you eat a lot, laugh a lot, and recharge fully!” From this, it can be seen that context, relationship, closeness, and purpose determine the tone you use. Choosing the wrong tone and vocabulary can make your greeting feel too formal and cold or, conversely, too exaggerated.
If You Want To Build A Deep Connection
The key to giving meaningful greetings is also to add warmth and sincerity. You can mention their name, insert a short prayer, or add specific wishes. For example, if they have recently experienced a tragedy, you can slip in a specific prayer and wish to build an emotional connection. It should be noted that more thoughtful attention will be more memorable than a generic one-liner, such as “May this Eid bring clarity, new beginnings, and every prayer you made be answered!”
Ultimately, natural greetings are not the longest or most formal ones. Natural greetings are those that feel sincere, relevant, and appropriate to the closeness and purpose of the recipient. When you understand this, your English will feel warm and meaningful.
