Why Subtitles Are Your Best Friend (And When to Turn Them Off)

by Kesha Centa Putri

Have you ever watched an English movie with subtitles by your side? For many learners, subtitles are a reliable companion that makes watching more enjoyable. While subtitles are often considered a tool when watching foreign language movies, videos, or series, they actually play a more crucial and strategic role for foreign language learners. Serving as a bridge that connects the spelling of foreign words with the pronunciation of native speakers, subtitles help the brain understand how commonly found written words are pronounced in real contexts.

In the early stages of learning, subtitles can boost your vocabulary, clarify pronunciation, and support comprehension of fast-paced conversations. By reading and listening at the same time, you strengthen your listening skills while enriching your vocabulary naturally. Over time, this helps to strengthen language comprehension and processing.

There’s nothing wrong with using subtitles as your tool, but turning them off is a special way to challenge yourself and continue improving your listening skills. Once you become familiar with the storyline and the actors’ accents, gradually reducing or removing the subtitles may become a next step. Watching without subtitles forces the brain to rely entirely on hearing, which makes listening skills more responsive and acute, familiarizes you with the pronunciation of various vocabulary words, builds confidence, and improves your understanding of the foreign language you are learning. Reducing the use of and dependence on subtitles is also a crucial step in the learning process because it encourages the development of cognitive language skills. Without text as the main guide, the brain learns to process information directly from sound, which, when done regularly, will begin to make the sense of hearing more responsive and acute until it becomes familiar and feels natural.

Essentially, subtitles are a very useful tool at the beginning, but the ultimate goal is to be able to understand without them. By using subtitles strategically and knowing when to turn them off, you can improve your listening skills more effectively and naturally.

  1. I agreed. Having subtitles allow any films/videos more accessible to everyone ☺️ i still use them mainly for scientific explanation videos

    1. That’s super interesting! Never really crossed our mind that subtitles are also used for educational videos but of course they are! A great way to add your general/scientific knowledge and practice your English 🙂
